NEW YORK — Mark Teixiera blasted a grand slam in the third inning off a struggling Justin Masterson as the New York Yankees beat the Cleveland Indians, 7-4, in the opening game of a three-game series.

With the loss, the Indians fall a full game behind the Detroit Tigers, who had an off day.

Cleveland plated the game’s first run in the top of the third when Michael Bourn scored from third on a fielder’s choice by first baseman Nick SwisherMike Aviles had been at second on the play, but was tagged out trying to advance to third.

New York countered with a quick barrage in the bottom half of the third. Reid Brignac and Austin Romineopened the inning with back-to-back singles and advanced when Brett Gardner walked to load the bases. After aRobinson Cano fielder’s choice that cut the run off at home, Teixeira sent a line drive into the first row of seats in right for a grand slam.

The homer was Teixeira’s first of the season and just his second hit since coming off the disabled list. He had been 1-for-9 with seven strikeouts before the home run.

The Indians tied the game against Yankees starter Andy Pettitte in the fifth, but would not re-take the lead. Drew Stubbs doubled to open the inning and advanced to third on an infield single by Bourn. Aviles hit a sacrifice fly to second, which scored Stubbs who made a heads-up base running decision on the awkward pop up.

On the next play, Asdrubal Cabrera grounded out and injured his right quadriceps muscle, an injury he had been playing through. He was helped off the field, unable to place any weight on his right leg.

Pettitte walked the next two hitters to load the bases. Carlos Santana followed with a bags juiced, ground rule double to third that tied the game at four.

Following the double, Pettitte was finished, having allowed four earned runs in four and two-thirds innings. He surrendered seven hits and three walks while striking out three in his first start off the 15-day disabled list. Shawn Kelley (3-0, 5.24) finished the fifth and picked up the win.

Three Yankees relievers combined to hold the Tribe lineup to just two base runners over the final three frames, withMariano Rivera picking up his American League leading 20th save of the season.

Masterson (8-4, 3.57) struggled for the second time in three starts, allowing seven runs (all earned) on nine hits and three walks. He struck out five. In addition to the Teixeira grand slam, Masterson allowed solo homer to former Indian Travis Hafner that counted as the seventh and final run of the game.

Cody Allen and Joe Smith pitched the final one and two-thirds innings while allowing just a hit and a walk.

The teams will the play the second game of the series on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Scott Kazmir (3-2, 5.13) will take the ball for the Indians against New York righty David Phelps (3-3, 4.65).
