A day after the Columbus Clippers had a great showing at the plate, the Toledo Mud Hens returned the favor.

The Clippers (10-7), fell to the Mud Hens, 8-3, on Sunday afternoon in Toledo, after winning the first game of the series, 12-6, on Saturday night.

Toledo held a 6-0 lead after four innings, and staved off any rallies by Columbus in the game’s final innings, on way to victory.

Right-hander Corey Kluber (3-1), had a decent showing on the hill for Columbus, going five innings and giving up three earned runs while striking out four Toledo batters. The Clippers’ defense made two errors, however, which allowed three more Mud Hens’ runners to cross the plate while Kluber was still pitching.

Columbus right fielder Chad Huffman and first baseman Beau Mills had strong offensive games in the loss, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and 2-for-3 with one double, respectively.

Toledo opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second inning on a two-run home run by third baseman Audy Ciriaco.

The Mud Hens added to their lead in the following inning. Toledo designated hitter Brad Eldred singled to center field on a weak line drive, which brought home a run.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Columbus defense allowed Toledo to get more runners across the plate.

With one runner on, Clippers’ third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall made an errant throw to first base on a groundball by Ciriaco, allowing him to reach.

After a sacrifice bunt and a walk, the Mud Hens scored on a fly ball to right field. The next Toledo batter singled, plating two more Toledo runners, and extending their lead to 6-0 after four frames.

Columbus got two runs back in the top of the sixth inning on a double to center field by Mills, but Toledo would add another run in the bottom of the inning and two more in the bottom of the eighth inning, securing their victory.

In the game, the Clippers went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position, and left eight runners on base.

The Clippers and Mud Hens will play again in Toledo on Monday at 6:30 p.m. before returning to Columbus on Tuesday for two more games against each other.
