ZEBULON, N.C.- The Carolina Mudcats fell to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 10-1 in the first game of the three-game series Friday night at Five County Stadium.

Despite hours of rain and flood alerts in the piedmont region, the game surprisingly started on time and on a nearly dry field.

Right-handed pitcher Mason Radeke made his pitching debut for the Mudcats and tossed 3 1/3 innings with three runs on six hits. This was only Radeke’s second start of the season, his first being at Lake County.

The Pelicans started right-hander Joe Van Meter. Van Meter took the win and pitched five innings while allowing zero runs on four hits.

The Pelicans started offensively with three runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. Second baseman Rougned Odor tripled on a sharp line drive that scored lead off man Luis Sardina and centerfielder Jake Skole. Designated hitter Trever Adams also contributed to the score with a RBI ground out. The Pelicans led 3-0 at the end of the inning.

Right fielder Jordan Smith recorded the Mudcats’ first hit of the game in the bottom of the second with a ground ball single to right field. Catcher Charlie Valerio followed suit with a single, but both Smith and Valerio were left on base at the end of the inning.

With two outs and no one on in the third inning, Joe Wendle doubled on a fly ball to the left field corner. In hopes to score Wendle, first baseman Jerrud Sabourin bombed a promising ball but it was caught by left fielder Chris Grayson to end the inning. The score remained 3-0 in favor of the Pelicans to start the fourth inning.

Right-hander Rob Nixon replaced Radeke with one out in the top of the fourth with Carolina down 3-0. With Adams at bat, a costly wild pitch by Nixon scored first baseman Kevin Torres. Adams’ at bat ended with a RBI sacrifice fly out to centerfield, which increased the lead to 5-0 for the Pelicans.

Smith earned his second hit of the game with a double to left field in the bottom of the fourth, but the Mudcats failed to piece together an offensive inning.

The Pelicans increased their lead by two more runs in the sixth inning. Odor doubled on a soft line drive to left field followed by a line drive single from Adams. Adams advanced to second on a throwing error by Smith. Grayson ended the inning with a two RBI sacrifice fly out to score Odor and Adams. The Pelicans led 7-0.

A pitching change for the Pelicans in the bottom of the sixth set the tempo for the inning as the Mudcats hitters went three up three down.

After allowing two runs on three hits over 2 2/3 innings, Nixon was relived by right-hander Grant Sides.

The Pelicans continued to blow out the Mudcats in the ninth inning with a three-run double by Jake Skole.

The Mudcats broke the shutout in the ninth inning with a RBI line drive single from designated hitter Tony Wolters. With the Mudcats finally on the board, the ending score stood 10-1.

The Mudcats continue their series against the Pelicans Saturday evening. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
