Zebulon, NC--The Myrtle Beach Pelicans completed a three-game sweep of the Carolina Mudcats Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium with a 6-4 win.

Right-hander Michael Peoples started for the Mudcats and went 5.1 innings with two strikeouts and four hits. Right-hander Francisco Valera(0-3) took the loss for Carolina. Left-hander Will Lamb (1-0) pitched four hitless innings with one walk and one strikeout to take the win for Myrtle Beach.

Myrtle Beach won its eighth consecutive game against Carolina. The loss was the sixth in the row for the Mudcats. Manager David Wallace said there’s work to be done all around if the team hopes to earn more wins before the second half of the season begins.

“I think there’s things that we need to do better if we want to win some of these games,” he said.

“There are things in pitching, in defense and in offense that we’ll keep working on and we’ll get better at.”

Peoples gave up a walk and a homerun to catcher Kellin Deglan to put the Pelicans ahead by two in the top of the second.

The Mudcats took the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Starter Alec Asher walked leftfielder Bo Greenwell and catcher Charlie Valerio and a double from left fielder Bryson Myles scored Greenwell. Shortstop Paddy Materatook a ball to the left shoulder to load the bases and infielder Zack MacPhee followed with a single to score Valerio and tie the game. A sacrifice fly from second baseman Joe Wendle and a single from shortstop Francisco Lindorto score Matera gave the Mudcats the advantage, 4-2, entering the half. Lamb replaced Asher with one out left in the inning.

“Peoples went out and set the tone,” Wallace said. “He went right back at them after giving up a two-run homerun and kept it center, and our offense was able to come to live with those four runs in that inning.”

Myrtle Beach surged ahead in the top of the sixth as Peoples began to struggle. He gave up a single and a walk before being relieved. Valera started his outing with a double to Adams to score Cantwell. He then hit outfielderChris Grayson to load the bases. First baseman Joe Maloney walked to score infielder Rougned Odor and begin the comeback. A double down the third base line from second baseman Edwin Garcia sent home first basemanTrever Adams and Grayson and brought the score to 6-4 in favor of the Pelicans.

Lamb kept the Mudcats from making an offensive push and retired three consecutive batters from the fifth inning onwards.  The Carolina bullpen struggled to control the Pelicans and Michael Goodnight entered the game for Valera in the top of the eighth. Fabio Martinez relieved him in the top of the ninth.

The Mudcats begin a three-game home stand against the Potomac Nationals Monday at Five County Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
