CEDAR RAPIDS – The Lake County Captains fell to the Cedar Rapids Kernals 2-1 on Monday, despite a six-inning no-hit bid by starter Shawn Morimando.

Morimando (4-2, 3.55), a 5’11” lefty, took the bump for the Captains against Cedar Rapids lefty Eswarlin Jimenez (3-4, 4.16).

Both pitchers kept the runs to a minimum, but the Kernals scored first via the free pass as shortstop Kevin Moesquit drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Left fielder Zach Borenstein followed with another walk and both runners pulled off a double steal before Moesquit scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of centerfielder Andy Workman.

Meanwhile, the Captains managed to string together a handful of hits, but could not come through to provide Morimando with any run support.

Morimando held the Kernals hitless until the sixth inning, when second baseman Alex Yarbrough tripled deep to center with one out for Cedar Rapids’ first hit of the game. Cue Workman, who hit his second sacrifice fly of the game to score Yarbrough, giving Cedar Rapids the 2-0 lead.

Morimando’s day ended as Antwonie Hubbard replaced him to start the seventh, sealing Morimando’s line at six innings pitched, yielding two runs on one hit and five walks while fanning four. Hubbard tossed a scoreless seventh before the Captains finally jumped on the board in the eighth.

Left fielder Zach MacPhee got things going in the eighth as he laced a one-out single to left and advanced to second on a balk by Kernals’ relief pitcher Michael Johnson. After second baseman Jose Ramirez grounded out to move MacPhee to third, shortstop Francisco Lindor singled score MacPhee, putting the Captains on the board down 2-1.

The one-run lead was more than enough for the Cedar Rapids bullpen as Stephen Tromblee and Ty Kelley shut the door on the Captains in the ninth, securing the Kernals with the 2-1 victory.

The Captains out-hit the Kernals 10-2 on Monday, but left seven men on base as they could not bring the runners in.

Next, the Captains head home to Eastlake to host the West Michigan Whitecaps for a three-game series starting on Wednesday.
