Captains Rally Back for 6-4 Win

Down two in the eighth inning on Monday night and the bases loaded, Jesus Aguilar ripped a single up the middle driving in a pair to tie the game at four. Giovanny Urshela completed the comeback with a smash to leftfield scoring Alex Monsalve giving Lake County a 5-4 lead. The Captains avoided the sweep with a 6-4 win over Lansing.

In the first inning, Lansing loaded the bases and scored a run on an RBI ground out by KC Hobson to give the Lugnuts a 1-0 lead.

Captains tied the game up at one, in the second inning after a leadoff double by Jesus Aguilar. Aguilar came into score on a Jordan Casas sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Eli Boike lead the third inning off for Lansing with a triple after ball was misplayed by LeVon Washington. Jake Marinick drove in Boike for a 2-1 lead.

Lake County loaded the bases with nobody out in the third inning. Washington hit into a double play that scored Moises Montero to tie the game at 2-2.

Bryson Namba belted a two run shot in the fourth inning to leftfield giving Lansing the lead 4-2.

Kyle Petter (1-2) picked up his first win of the season working 1.1 innings, no hits and three strike outs. Dayton Marze (3-4) took the loss allowing four runs on five hits in just one inning of work.

Lake County will be back in action Wednesday night in Peoria for a three game series beginning at 8:00PM. The Captains will start RHP Mike Goodnight (5-7) against Frank Del Ville (0-1) for the Chiefs.

Aeros take series from SeaWolves

The Akron Aeros won the finale of a four-game series against the Erie SeaWolves 6-3 Monday at Canal Park.

With the win, the Aeros (47-44) have taken three of four from Erie and have finished the first half of 2011 over .500.

Right-handed pitcher Joe Gardner earned the win for Akron tossing 5.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits, walking three and striking out five. Right-hander Cory Burns recorded the last five outs to notch his league-best 25th save of the season.

Righty Brooks Brown suffered the loss for the SeaWolves lasting five innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits, walking three and striking out four.

Beau Mills put the Aeros on the board in the bottom of the third inning with a two-run home run.

Akron added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, the Aeros loaded the bases on three consecutive singles from Juan Diaz, Mills and Chun Chen. Nick Weglarz walked to force home a run and give the Aeros a 3-0 lead. Raul Padron followed with an RBI single scoring Mills and increasing the lead to 4-0. Chen scored on a throwing error to make it 5-0.

The SeaWolves (43-47) answered in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Bryan Pounds tripled and scored on a Rawley Bishop single to cut the Akron lead to 5-1. Audy Ciriaco chased Gardner from the game with a single. Tyler Sturdevant replaced Gardner and allowed a two-RBI double to Michael Bertram to make it 5-3.

Akron tacked on a run in the home half of the frame and went on to the win.

The Aeros are off Tuesday and Wednesday for the Eastern League All-Star break. Following the break, Akron will begin a three-game set at Harrisburg on Thursday. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

Kinston downed 9-1

The Keys handed Kinston a 9-1 loss Monday night at Harry Grove stadium in the series finale, sending Kinston out of town having lost two of three games.

Clayton Cook struggled through his outing, allowing the Keys to get on the board in the first inning after a walk of Bobby Stevens came back to bite Kinston’s starter. Jacob Julius jump started a four run third inning with a lead off home run. Nine Keys batters came to the plate in the third inning. The K-Tribe defense did not help Cook in the fourth, committing two errors in the three run frame.

Cook went four innings, giving up eight runs, seven of which were earned in his 76 pitch effort. Cook gave up ten hits and walked one in picking up his sixth loss of the season.

Trey Haley made his Indians debut, giving up one run in the fifth before striking out the Frederick side in the sixth. Jose Flores and Kyle Landis kept Frederick scoreless through the final two innings.

Adam Abraham went 1/1 with two walks and Jeremie Tice turned in the only multi hit effort for Kinston, finishing 2/3 with a walk.

Kinston has a scheduled off day on Tuesday before resuming Carolina League action, Wednesday night at Potomac. Brett Brach will try to get Kinston back on the winning track with a first pitch set for 7:05 pm Wednesday.

Scrappers lose to Williamsport again

Mahoning Valley lost for the second straight night to Williamsport by a final score of 7-4. Righty Mason Radeke was great for the first four innings before running into trouble in the fifth where he allowed four runs on three hits and a walk, with the big blow being a three-run homer with two outs. He finished the night going five innings and allowing four runs on four hits, three walks and had three strikeouts.

Right-handed reliever Cody Allen took the loss in relief throwing three innings and giving up the deciding three runs on three hits, a walk, and had one strikeout.

At the plate the Scrappers pounded out ten hits and drew five walks as a team. Third baseman KC Serna went 2-for-4 with a walk, catcher Jake Lowery went 2-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI, and two walks, and center fielder Cody Elliott went 3-for-3 with a triple and walk.
