Columbus bats continue to dominate International League

Columbus used a 17-hit assault to beat the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 10-7 in International League play on Friday night.

The Clippers continued to hit the ball at an astonishing rate.  The Clippers are currently hitting .295 as a team for the 2011 season, which is 25 points higher than the Durham Bulls, the second place team.  They currently lead the league in runs (179, next closest is 140), hits (280), RBI (166, next closest is 137), total bases (434, next closest is 406), walks (135, next closest is at 120), on base percentage (.388, next closest is .350), slugging (.457, next closest is .434) and on base plus slugging (.845, next closest is .783).

Tonight, Ezequiel Carrera, Lonnie Chisenhall, Chad Huffman and Cord Phelps all led the team with three hits each, while Travis Buck and Jared Head both had two hits.

Joe Martinez got the win in 5+ innings of work, while Josh Judy pitched a perfect ninth inning for his fifth save of the season.

Aeros lose late, fall to Thunder 7-4

The Trenton Thunder scored three times off Cory Burns in the top of the ninth inning to break a tie and beat the Akron Aeros 7-4 Friday at Canal Park.

Burns suffered the loss striking out one and walking none in his one inning of work.

Cleveland Indians right-handed pitcher Carlos Carrasco made a rehab start with the Aeros and got a no decision tossing 3.2 innings, giving up four earned runs on four hits, allowing a home run, walking three and striking out three.

Cory Arbiso got the win for the Thunder pitching 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out two while walking none.

The Thunder (14-14) got things started offensively in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Austin Romine singled and Bradley Suttle followed with a two-run home run to make it 2-0.

The Aeros (13-15) got a run back in the bottom of the second inning as Matt Lawson tripled home Kyle Bellows to cut the Thunder lead to 2-1.

The Thunder added two more runs in the top of the third inning on a Suttle RBI single and a Jose Gil RBI double to make it 4-1.

Akron scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Matt McBride solo home run. McBride has now hit a home run in three consecutive games.

The Aeros rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Donnie Webb and Jordan Henry both reached on two Jose Pirela errors. Tim Fedroff drove them in with a single to center field to tie the game 4-4.

Trenton retook the lead in the top of the ninth inning on a Corban Joseph RBI triple and an Addison Maruszak two-run home run.

The Aeros and Thunder will play game two of this three-game series Saturday afternoon at Canal Park. Righty Joe Gardner will get the start for the Aeros. He will be opposite fellow right-hander Craig Heyer. First pitch is at 1:05 p.m. The game can be heard on Fox Sports 1350 AM or online at sportsradio1350.com. Coverage begins at 12:50 p.m.

Bowling Green beats Aeros, 6-3

Bowling Green used solid pitching, and clutch hitting to beat Akron 6-3 in the final game of the series on Friday night.

Akron could never quite catch the Hot Rods on Friday night, falling behind 3-1 in the third inning, after tying the game at one apiece in the first. Bowling Green would break the game open with a three-run seventh inning off of Captains starter, Cole Cook.

The game marked 2011 second round pick LeVon Washington's first appearance in the organization. The highly touted prospect led off for the Aeros, and went 1-for-4, with a walk and a stolen base, while taking over the center field slot.

Cook took the loss, his third of the season.
