WILMINGTON – The Carolina Mudcats finally defeated the Wilmington Blue Rocks early on Wednesday after losing two straight games at Frawley Stadium.  With a 1-0 shutout victory, Carolina improved to a record of 6-6 gaining some ground in the Southern Division of the Carolina League.

The Mudcats’ solitary run came in the top of the fourth inning off Blue Rocks’ starting pitcher Jason Adam.  Through three innings of work Adam had only allowed one hit while recording a strikeout and two walks.  The first Mudcat Adam faced in the fourth inning was center fielder Tyler Holt who managed to reach base on an error by Blue Rocks’ third baseman Angel Franco.

While Adam faced Mudcats’ right fielder Jordan Casas, Holt stole second base to move into scoring position.  Casas and third baseman Giovanny Urshela were unable to advance Holt any further than second base when they both popped out.  With two outs and Mudcats’ first baseman Jesus Aguilar batting, Holt stole third for his third stolen base off the season.

Aguilar came through with a two-out single to left field and Holt scored the only run of the ball game; the only run that Carolina would need.

Carolina came close to adding another run in the fourth inning.  Mudcats’ designated hitter Jeremie Tice singled to left field off Adam and with runners at first and second, Tyler Cannon stepped up to the plate.

Cannon, who had struck out his first time up, had the opportunity to break the game open but Instead he struck out swinging and the inning was over.  On the day Cannon struck out four time in four at-bats.

Dominant pitching was the story of the afternoon for both ball clubs.  Even after giving up the winning run, Adam remained in the game well into the eighth inning.  It wasn’t until Adam gave up his third walk to Casas that Wilmington brought in reliever Cole White.

Carolina relied on starting pitcher Mike Rayl to calm the Wilmington offense.  Earning his first win of the season after two consecutive losses, Rayl allowed only three hits and struck out four batters.

The Mudcats’ will return home for two consecutive four games series' against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and the Lynchburg Hillcats; two teams Carolina has yet to face this season.

Game one against the Pelicans will be at 7:15 p.m. at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, North Carolina.
