Around the Farm takes a quick look at some of yesterday’s performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday’s game.

***Special Note: Due to a monsoon that apparently crossed the nation, the only game played tonight was by the Columbus affiliate.

Tim Fedroff: LF, Columbus Clippers: 3-for-3, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 SB, 2 CS:

In 2012, Tim Fedroff was the darling of the nightly Around the Farm here at Indians Baseball Insider, as he finished with a solid .316 average after hitting over .300 in Double and Triple A. This season has been a bit different. He struggled in April, hitting only .238, before rebounding in May, hitting .311. It’s not hard to figure what Fedroff’s future is with the Indians now that they made the offseason moves to bring in Nick SwisherMichael Bourn and Drew Stubbs. Fedroff has an outside shot at the big league club in September, or if the injury bug sweeps through Cleveland. Other than that, he has no chance at all for a starting role with the Tribe, or even that fourth outfield slot currently held by Ryan Raburn.

Chun-Hsiu Chen: 1B, Columbus Clippers: 1-for-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K:

Chen hit his third home run in as many nights. It was his only hit, but when you are a player that comes into the season with questions about home run power, it’s not only worthy of note in ATF, but worthy of one of the top two slots. Chen already has five home runs in 22 games for the Clippers, to go along with his six home runs in Akron. His career high is the 16 he hit with the Aeros in 2011. I’m not sure why the power uptick, but it’s a welcome sight for sure as the Indians look forward to find potential plugs in the lineup later this season and beyond.

  • Ezequiel CarreraDH, Columbus: 1-for-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 K, 1 CS: Carrera is 3-for-27 over his last six games. The only reason why he even gets a mention today is because it’s a light ATF night.
  • Matt Carson: CF, Columbus: 2-for-4, 1 RBI, 1 K: Carson is only hitting .238 on the season, but is 4-for-8 over the last two ballgames, with three runs, a double, a homer and two RBI.
  • Matt Lawson: SS, Columbus: 2-for-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K: Lawson now has back-to-back two hit ballgames and has gone 4-for-10, with three runs, two doubles and an RBI during that stretch.
  • Joe Martinez: SP, Columbus: W (2-5): 6 1/3 IP, 8 H, 2 R/1ER, 6 K, 1 HR: This was a welcome sight for Martinez, who has been terrible since May 9th. Over his last seven games, he’s 1-3 with a 9.98 ERA, so this was a nice change.
  • JC Romero: RP, Columbus: 1 IP, 1 K: Romero made his second appearance for the Clippers, and was much better than his first. He’s a lefty, and my bet here is that he has some assurances that he’ll get to the Indians at some point soon. That’s likely why he signed with the Indians. Hey, he’s a lefty, so let’s see what he’s got.
  • Jerry Gil: RP, Columbus: S (2), 1 2/3 IP, 1 K: Gil has the velocity, but he throws an extremely flat ball, and that’s been evident in Columbus. He’s also struggled finding the plate. In 41 innings, he’s struck out 31, and walked a crazy 26 hitters.

Thanks. I just hope LWash is not injured again. He's shown such great flashes of potential this year when healthy.

I'm not sure what's up with Washington myself. In all honesty, over the past 10 days I haven't paid too much attention to the minors. Will turn my attention back to it after my last two pieces on the draft go up in the next day or so. I will try and find out in the meantime what is up with LWash.

He's on the DL, and the only report that I've heard is from the Metzger report that he was recovering from the flu. He must have had the bird flu...

He's not listed on the official Eastern League dl...so who knows.

Any word yet on what's going on with LWash?

The stolen bases for Chen are a very interesting development. That's never been a part of his game. It would be great if he could find a position. If the power/steals combination he's shown this season continues, he would really be a nice bench piece. But without a position it's very difficult.

On Saturday, Chen stole second and when the throw got by the SS, he raced around to score. Surprising speed for the former catcher and you got to like the hustle. And his bomb Saturday night was a no doubter.....absolutely crushed to left.

Seeing Chen's performance makes me wonder if he is one of those rare guys who can turn it up for power and then down for contact from bat to bat. It is a rare skill, but looking at his numbers the past few years kind of indicates he may have that rare ability.

If so, it doesn't mean he can necessarily do it in the majors, but he seems to have that attribute.
