2013 Indians 20th round pick: CA Shane Rowland

In the 20th round of the 2013 Draft the Cleveland Indians select catcher Shane Rowland from the University of Tampa (FL).

Born: 11/22/1991 - Height: 5'8" - Weight: 168 - Bats: Left - Throws: Right

Jeff Ellis: Rowland is the son of the Yankees Director of International Scouting.  He was a well known name out of high school. He is an athletic player who has an advanced feel for the catching position. He is a solid defender, but the bat is the question. After one year at Miami he transferred out only hitting .175 that year.  He struggled to hit at Tampa University and seems to have lost his starting spot there this year.  I could find no injury, so I have to assume his struggles with the bat moved him to the bench. He is a glove guy, so he might be able to challenge Roberto Perez for top defender at the catching position. He has gold glove upside, but will never have an average hit tool. He might be no more than a back up, but defense will be what gets him to the majors.

Daddy is a Yankee scout. Up side is his glove. Down side is his attitude, plus he is a quitter. The starter at U of T was much, much better, and went undrafted, and was signed as a free agent by the Rays. Dad got him picked, plain and simple.

He's a kid that you look at as a career baseball guy ...he sticks because he can catch, and you always can use that in any system. He'll fill a roster for years, and look to coach down the road.

He lost his starting spot at Tampa and decided to quit the team at the beginning of the season. Not a good team player. Teammates at Miami and Tampa hated him.
