In the 23rd round of the 2012 MLB Draft the Cleveland Indians have selected catcher Richard Stock out of the University of Nebraska.

Date of birth: 2/8/1991 - Height: 6’2” - Weight: 190 - Bats: Left - Throws: Right

Quick take: Stock was originally drafted by the Brewers in the 45th round of the 2009 Draft. He has bounced around as he originally went to the University of Southern California for his freshmen year in 2010, transferred to Pierce College in Los Angeles, CA for his sophomore year in 2011, and then for his junior year transferred to Nebraska. He hit a home run in his first collegiate at bat and on the first pitch he saw, and brings a lot of power to the plate. He also has a strong arm behind the plate.

Jeff Ellis: When I saw the Indians drafted Richard Stock I was a bit confused, then I remembered that his brother is Robert Stock. There was talk about Robert Stock when the Cardinals changed him from a catcher to a pitcher.  Richard has the same really strong arm that his brother has as well which is why he has played catcher. He started at USC, got hurt, then went to Los Angeles Pierce JC, and finally ended up at Nebraska. This injury led him to play first base and outfield this year as he recovered from injury. Thanks to his even more well thought of brother he was a known player and was drafted in the 45th round in 2009 by the Brewers knowing that he would be a very hard sign.  On PGcrosschecker they had him listed as a prospect on the rise and the best hitter for the state of Nebraska.  He hit very well this year with a .359 average and 15 doubles, and flashed potential plus bat speed. If he was a catcher for sure he would have gone much higher, but at this point he is a talented player who has some potential plus characteristics that would be a nice addition to the system.
